Overview
As Director of the e-Learning Management Unit (eLMU) at Wollega University, I organized a three-day capacity-building training on Digital Course Content Development in collaboration with the Office of the Academic Vice President, held from March 5-7, 2026 (26/02/2018 E.C. to 28/02/2018 E.C.).
The training was designed to strengthen the capacity of selected instructors in developing high-quality digital learning materials for Wollega University’s online learning platform. It focused on two major areas: building online courses using Open edX Studio and applying instructional design principles to develop engaging, learner-centered digital content.
My Role
As the organizer and one of the lead trainers, I coordinated the overall planning and implementation of the training while delivering the technical sessions on Open edX Studio Course Development.
My training covered:
- Introduction to Open edX Studio and course authoring.
- Creating and organizing course structures.
- Sections, subsections, and learning units.
- Interactive learning components and problem types.
- Online quizzes and assessments.
- Course navigation and learner experience.
- Resource management and course publishing.
- Best practices for developing engaging online learning experiences.
The sessions combined presentations with extensive hands-on activities, enabling participants to build their own online courses using the Open edX platform.
The training also featured technical sessions by Mr. Tadele Debisa, who introduced advanced Open edX course configuration, grading policies, learner management, and course scheduling, while Dr. Biranu Bekele delivered comprehensive sessions on Instructional Design, covering learning outcomes, syllabus development, content organization, multimedia integration, learner engagement, and pedagogical strategies for online learning.
Training Outcomes
Participants strengthened their ability to:
- Design and develop complete online courses using Open edX Studio.
- Structure digital learning materials effectively.
- Create interactive assessments and learning activities.
- Configure grading systems and course settings.
- Apply instructional design principles to digital learning.
- Develop engaging multimedia learning resources.
- Design learner-centered online and blended courses.
Impact
The training strengthened the university’s capacity to develop high-quality digital learning resources and supported the implementation of Wollega University’s digital education strategy. By combining technical platform skills with sound instructional design practices, the program prepared instructors to develop engaging online and blended courses that enhance teaching quality and improve student learning experiences.
Reflection
Organizing and facilitating this training was an important milestone in advancing Wollega University’s digital transformation journey. Effective online education requires more than technology alone; it depends on well-designed learning experiences supported by sound instructional design principles. It was rewarding to support instructors in developing both the technical and pedagogical competencies needed to create high-quality digital courses for the university’s expanding online learning ecosystem.
