Overview
As a member of the Summer Voluntary Service Task Force at Wollega University, I contributed to organizing and implementing a Computer Maintenance Campaign under the 2018 E.C. Summer Voluntary Service Program. The initiative was launched at Biiftuu Nekemte High School to improve the functionality of school computer laboratories and strengthen the effective use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning.
The campaign was initiated to support local secondary schools by maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing computer laboratory equipment, ensuring that students and teachers have reliable access to digital learning resources. Following the successful completion of activities at Biiftuu Nekemte High School, the campaign continued in other selected high schools across Nekemte City.
My Role
As a member of the Wollega Institute of Technology (WIT) Informatics Task Force, I actively participated in planning and implementing the computer maintenance campaign. Working alongside fellow volunteers, I contributed technical expertise to improve the functionality and reliability of ICT facilities in the participating schools.
My responsibilities included:
- Diagnosing hardware and software problems.
- Performing preventive maintenance and system optimization.
- Installing and configuring operating systems and essential software.
- Troubleshooting computer and peripheral devices.
- Restoring non-functional computers to operational condition.
- Supporting the organization and maintenance of school computer laboratories.
- Collaborating with team members to deliver sustainable ICT support services.
The campaign demonstrated the value of teamwork, professional service, and knowledge sharing in addressing the technology needs of local schools.
Outcomes
The campaign successfully contributed to:
- Improving the functionality of school computer laboratories.
- Increasing the availability of computers for students and teachers.
- Enhancing ICT-supported teaching and learning.
- Extending the lifespan of existing computer equipment.
- Strengthening collaboration between Wollega University and secondary schools in Nekemte City.
The experience also provided an opportunity to apply technical skills in a real community setting while supporting schools with practical ICT solutions.
Impact
The computer maintenance campaign strengthened digital learning environments by improving access to reliable ICT infrastructure in participating schools. It also reinforced Wollega University’s commitment to community engagement through voluntary service, demonstrating how technical expertise can be used to support education and promote digital inclusion within the local community.
Reflection
Participating in this community service initiative was a rewarding experience that demonstrated the positive impact of applying technical knowledge to real community challenges. Supporting schools through ICT maintenance not only enhanced learning environments but also strengthened collaboration between the university and the community. I believe such initiatives contribute to sustainable educational development while encouraging professionals to use their expertise in service of society.
